The standby diesel generator in your building would not be
in actual use for many years apart from the monthly routine runs for few
minutes. Many users ignore measuring the vibration levels at different points
in the generator and with time the levels increase. The vibration is caused by
many reasons but mostly from the normal time wear and team in rubber and spring
mounts and bearings. Ignoring the replacement of the mounts for example would
lead to serious damage to highly expensive parts of the engine and alternator
and even connection systems like fuel and air intake and exhaust. The vibration
could further affect the concrete foundation and cause cracks in the concrete
flooring and rooms walls.
JENGAN recommends measuring the vibration levels every 5 years and most likely replacing the rubber mounts which are usually between the concrete foundation and generator metal base or between the generator base and the major components such are the diesel engine, alternator and electric control pedestal.
